National Preparedness Month Readies Elderly Populations in Chino for Disasters?
9/5/2023 (Permalink)
These days, if not if, but when, the next big storm or natural disaster may impact our community. Our local Chino/Chino Hills team wants residents and businesses to be prepared for any emergency and urges residents to take part in National Preparedness Month.
Every September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), hosts a wide array of activities and initiatives to raise awareness and promote preparedness for emergencies and disasters. This year’s focus is on addressing the needs of elderly populations. Elderly populations are more vulnerable during a disaster because:
- They may take regular medications, or use medical equipment
- They may rely on specialized care
- They are more prone to heat or cold-related illnesses and dehydration
- They may live alone or in isolated environments
- They may face challenges in evacuation or temporary relocation due to mobility issues and transportation limitations
Preparing them includes developing strategies for their safe evacuation, identifying accessible transportation options, and ensuring appropriate accommodations and support services are available at shelters. National Preparedness Month’s Ready Campaign will engage communities to be more inclusive and help them to meet the needs of older adults and ensure they have the preparedness resources they need to stay safe and healthy during a disaster or emergency.
